Job Details

The Chief Operations Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the charity, working closely with the Chief Executive and Leadership Team to deliver the strategy and enable growth to support the core mission. 

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Chief Operations Officer will direct and oversee the operational activities of the charity. 

Key responsibilities and duties

Strategy delivery

  • Work closely with the Chief Executive in driving the organisation’s vision.
  • Implement business strategies and plans that align with the short- and long-term objectives of the charity.
  • Review and evaluate opportunities, risks and threats related to effective planning and implementation of the strategy.
  • Work with Heads of Departments to translate the strategy into business plans and operational delivery to meet business goals and annual targets, continually assessing and mitigating risk.
  • Partner with other internal business executives to accomplish short- and long-term goals.
  • Drive service development, modernisation and innovation across the departments, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop strategies for the organic growth of the charity and make sure they are implemented.
  • Ensure the charity maintains its competitive position in the market.
  • Oversee the operations of the organisation and make any necessary changes to meet business goals and projections.

Performance and quality

  • In all our operational activities, lead our transformation work and approach to continuous improvement, with a clear appetite for creativity, innovation and an inclusive approach.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements across the charity, (e.g., systems, business, service, efficiency, impact)
  • Measure and report on operational performance and develop plans to improve relevant key performance indicators.
  • Promote effective and clear internal and external communications.

Leadership and culture

  • Drive the effective performance of all key reports by providing engaging, inspirational and authentic leadership with sets high expectations, addresses development needs and tackles any poor performance effectively.
  • Promote, personally demonstrate and role model the values and behaviours of PAPYRUS, including equality, diversity and inclusion, to all employees, volunteers and externally to exemplify and maintain the charity’s external reputation, credibility and trust.
  • Work with the Head of People and Culture to ensure talent management and succession planning is in place at key positions in departments. 

Finance

  • Ensure proper oversight of the annual operating budgets, seeking out efficiency, sustainability and implementing cost savings where appropriate.
  • Ensure all programmes and departments meet the short- and long-term plans and budgets, based on defined goals and growth objectives.
  • Ensure that there is sufficient investment and funding for the business to facilitate operational growth.
  • Develop and control all operational budgets to ensure that the charity has all resources required to meet its objectives within agreed financial parameters and to maintain the financial strength of the charity.

Health and safety

  • Fully endorse, demonstrate and carry out the health and safety policy.
  • Comply with all policies and statutory regulations relating to health and safety, safe working practices, hygiene, cleanliness, fire and COSHH. This will include your awareness of any specific hazards in your workplace and assist if required with the amending of risk assessments periodically.
  • Identify and resolve maintenance requirements or hazards within the workplace and encourage any workforce to do the same to avoid injury.

Safeguarding

  • The company is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk and expects all staff and volunteers to endorse this commitment.
  • The employee must act to protect all children, young people and adults at risk that they interact with. The employee must report any misconduct or suspected misconduct to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
