The Auckland Project works hard to create a positive change for those living, working and visiting Bishop Auckland. We have created a visitor destination in Bishop Auckland, incorporating Auckland Castle (once home to the Prince Bishops of Durham), a Spanish Art Gallery, Faith Museum, Walled Garden, Deer Park, Mining Art Gallery, Auckland Tower visitor centre and Weardale Railway.

We want everyone who visits our sites to have a meaningful and enjoyable experience. We use our collections, assets, buildings and people to build that experience; behind which sit the many people, processes, systems and policies which make a wonderful day out - and the regeneration of our town - possible.

The Role

We are looking for a Chief Operating Officer who can create sustainability by ensuring the fundamentals of operating efficiently are in place, and the operating fabric of our organisation (and specifically the Heritage & Engagement and Guest Operations functions) is fit for purpose.

Reporting into the Chief Executive Officer, the post holder will oversee the Heritage & Engagement and the Guest Operations departments.

The Candidate

The role will suit someone who understands the role that culture, and heritage can play in regeneration, and how transformative experiences can change people’s lives and the social fabric of an area. As we transition into becoming a fully operational team, we need someone who can help us to make the best of what we already have in terms of social and economic return, and who can identify the opportunities and risks in the medium-term future.  You will need to be an articulate communicator with strong analytical skills, capable of creating a kind and curious culture of learning and discovery. We are looking for a leader who is strategic and hands-on; who can strengthen our current offer and ensure that our plans can be executed efficiently, in line with our vision.
