Flexible working arrangements, with office in Smithfield, Central London

Start date flexible but ideally July 2023

The Haberdashers’ Company is a City of London Livery Company, whose main activities are governance of its family of maintained and independent schools and charity trusteeship.  The Company is also a membership association, and operates from a Livery Hall situated in West Smithfield. The Executive Team comprises The Clerk and three others, one of which is the Director of Finance.  The Director of Finance is, in effect, also the Deputy Clerk and will therefore provide leadership to others in the organisation and hold some standing within the Company at large.

The position of Director of Finance becomes vacant in the autumn of 2023 and the intention is that there will be a hand over before the current incumbent leaves.  The incoming Director of Finance will ideally join the Company some time over the summer.

The role affords a highly capable finance professional the chance to operate at some significant scale and complexity, to influence and enact decision making at the highest levels within the Company, acting often as a critical friend, and to work alongside highly capable, committed senior Company members and colleagues. It is an exciting time to be joining the Company, with a number of major strategic initiatives in train.

The post would suit a highly capable finance professional who has a wide range of interests across the finance, commercial and property spheres. Candidates will be financially qualified, will likely have a good grasp of investment at some scale that includes property investment, and a genuine interest in being part of an historic but forward thinking institution and membership body.

An interest in charities and education would ensure the Director of Finance derived satisfaction from the work, but prior experience of either sector is not crucial. In order to be effective in the role however, it will be critical that the Director of Finance is sensitive to the ethos of a membership organisation with a history of which it is proud. They must also be relatively self-sufficient, grounded, and find the intellectual and people elements of this role deeply satisfying.
