Companies House are undergoing a historic change, to our systems, services, culture and ways of working. Our Digital & Technology and Data services are the heart of much of this change. Earlier this year the UK Government passed the Economic Crime Act which has given us the power to create the Register of Overseas Entities (ROE).

The second Economic Crime bill has been accelerated and will give us new powers in 2023, which will see us play an active role in the fight against economic crime as well as fulfilling our ambition to be the most innovative, open and trusted registry in the world. These changes represent the biggest opportunity for Companies House in almost 170 years. We are being granted the ability to play a leading role in the fight against corrupt business practices by providing the transparency and clarity necessary for the UK to continue to be regarded as a world-leading place to do business.

The Role

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Director of Digital & Technology to join Companies House as we continue our ambitious digital transformation, enhance digital services for customers, and broaden our critical activity and impact. We are looking for a driven and passionate digital and technology leader to deliver excellent digital services for customers and staff, working with colleagues, the Government Digital Service, BEIS and wider government. Companies House was awarded £63m in the spending review to spend on digital projects over the next 3 years. We seek a successful individual who is able to support us in harnessing this investment to improve services for 3.7 m companies and 12 million individual users annually and overseeing exciting new services that support our widening legislative remit.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the Executive and Main Board, you will lead the 220 strong Digital & Technology directorate, championing them, and supporting and maintaining an excellent team and culture, shaping the future of Companies House. You will lead the organisation in leveraging digital and technology capability to deliver organisational objectives, with the support of your team of 220 staff with the help of 6 Heads covering: IT Services, Product Design, Delivery, Software Engineering, Cyber Security and Innovation & Outreach.

You will be passionate about developing, maintaining and enhancing services that meet users' needs, ensuring technology and data enable better public services, improving the agility and governance of teams, and utilising innovation to positively influence our digital and technology future. Candidates will possess the skills, leadership and passion for improving public services and for building excellent teams.

Responsibilities will include:

  • As a member of our Executive Team and Main Board, shape our strategy and participate in corporate governance, delivery and risk management, ensuring accountability and ownership of our outcomes.
  • Review and enhance the current strategy, before setting out to deliver this to 2025, working with your team, the Executive (including the Chief Data Officer and the Director of Project Management) and the Main Board to shape the future of Companies House.
  • Develop and deliver the digital and technology strategy, plan and roadmap to move Companies House closer to being a digital led organisation and reduce tech debt.
  • Demonstrate visible leadership, role modelling our vision, values, cultures and behaviours whilst championing equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Support and build high-performing agile, diverse and inclusive teams. Attract, maintain and build a pipeline of talent and further expand the skills of our experienced and passionate digital and technology experts.
  • Collaborate across the organisation and ensure that we are building and delivering excellent digital services that meet the needs of our customers and our own people, measuring impact, benefits and performance.
  • Monitor markets to proactively identify commercial opportunities for the directorate that deliver the most value for taxpayer money. 
  • Manage strategic commercial relationships and delivery arrangements actively and effectively to provide ongoing value for money to the taxpayer.  
  • Leading a directorate of 220 people with 6 direct reports.

The successful candidate’s profile:

  • A recognised digital or technology leader (or ready to take this step), with a track record of leading and delivering digital transformation in a public, private or not for profit environment.
  • Proven experience in shaping, communicating and executing a strategic vision into deliverable operational plans which enhance an organisation’s digital and technology capability.
  • A knowledge and understanding of digital and technology market trends and best practices, including sector standards and security issues and processes, including cyber security.
  • A strong focus on quality. Experience in raising standards, ensuring controls are in place and effectively challenging to find common sense solutions to problems and the delivery of high-quality services and outcomes.
  • Outstanding communication and influencing skills, with proven ability to build effective relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders, capable of flexing style, understanding and engaging with different audiences. Able to simplify complex technology and digital issues, whilst explaining and championing technology choices to others.
  • Commercially aware with sound judgement and the capacity to research and analyse issues and provide sound advice to CEO and wider Executive Board.
  • Flexible and proactive in own approach to building productive working relationships internally and with external partners. 
  • Strategic thinker who can take the broader view and set the long-term strategy, and articulate a vision effectively, obtaining buy-in and engagement from others across an organisation. 
  • Capable of engaging highly effectively with a team, suppliers and stakeholders to define the best approach to service design. 
  • Ideally, experience of Agile, Machine Learning, Open Source, Cloud Platforms and Digital Services.
