The Opportunity:

We're looking for an exceptional Independent Non-Executive Director to join our dynamic UK Board of Directors. You'll also be appointed as Chair of the Board's Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee which will require you to obtain regulatory approvals to hold Senior Manager Functions 10 and 11 and to act as our Champion for Whistleblowing and Consumer Duty.

Our UK Board of Directors oversees the whole of Assurant's European Group which comprises operations in the UK, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain and Germany. A large proportion of our European business is the sale of mobile phone and gadget insurance distributed through banks, retailers and network providers. In addition, the European business offers a number of non-insurance products including mobile device upgrade, trade-in services, airport lounge access and device repair services.

You'll need to be able to commit around 25 days per year after the initial induction period with additional days as required to fulfill your, and the Board's, duties and responsibilities.

The Board and the Audit, Risk and Committee typically each meet seven times per year to align with the financial, regulatory reporting and strategic planning cycle. In-person attendance at our Crewe office will be expected for at least five of these meetings (usually our quarterly meetings and annual Board strategy session).

The ideal candidate will:
  • Be professionally qualified with experience working in a regulated financial services environment (preferably insurance)
  • Have Board level experience and, preferably, experience of chairing a Board Committee
  • Have recent and relevant financial knowledge and experience
  • Have experience working in, or closely with, Finance, Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit and/or Actuarial functions
  • Be credible with the PRA and FCA with knowledge of Solvency II, PRA/FCA Rules and SMCR

Key Skills:
  • Excellent leadership skills which have culture, ethics and values at the core
  • Strategic thinker with a performance-oriented mindset
  • Highly skilled and professional in verbal and written communications. Communicates with objectivity and with appropriate independent and constructive challenge
  • Builds effective relationships and works proactively and collaboratively with other directors and key stakeholders
  • Effectively articulates views with persuasion and influence.
  • Makes high-quality, and sometimes difficult, decisions after analysing supporting information and exercising independent judgment

At Assurant, diversity helps us inspire creativity in the global marketplace, and we are believers in the strategic value of inclusion and how it improves performance, creates growth opportunities, better aligns us to our clients, and enhances employee engagement.
