HM Courts & Tribunal Services

Independent Non-Executive Chair

Salary £25,000; time commitment of approximately 25 days each year

London

Our justice defends our fundamental rights and freedom. Our courts and tribunals underpin justice and affect the lives of millions every year. HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is reforming the services we offer to both the citizens who use them, and our partners in the justice system.

The HMCTS was created in 2011 and is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice. It uniquely operates on the basis of a partnership between the Lord Chancellor, the Lord Chief Justice and the Senior President of Tribunals (the ‘Principals’) and currently has around 16,000 staff across 350 locations with a gross annual budget of c£1.6 billion.

Responsible for the administration of the criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales and non-devolved tribunals in Scotland and Northern Ireland it handles over 4 million cases a year. Bringing crimes to justice; children kept safe; business dealings are securely underpinned; this is a truly important organisation.

We are seeking an experienced Chair, not necessarily in the courts or criminal justice system, to support the organisation as it looks to positively impact on the system as efficiently and effectively as possible.

With experience on the Board of a comparable, complex customer-focussed organisation in either the public or private sectors, with the ability to apply strategic insight and constructive challenge on complex organisational issues and drive improvements in performance. Strong commercial awareness, and highly developed analytical skills, combined with high levels of personal integrity and resilience will be critical. Excellent diplomatic skills of course, and the ability to influence and build strategic consensus.

With a time commitment of approximately 25 days each year, including one full day board meeting a month in London, there is an annual salary of £25,000.
