Chief Financial Officer and Executive Divisional Director of Finance, Infrastructure & Commercial Services

The University of Exeter is one of the world’s best and is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities.  Formed in 1955, the University is ranked in the top 150 universities in the world and the top 15 UK universities in prestigious global and national league tables.  Exeter has a proud history and has grown from its roots in the South-West of England to be a truly inclusive and diverse global university with a community of over 27,000 students and 6,400 staff across four campuses in Devon and Cornwall and an increasingly significant worldwide digital footprint.

Exeter’s research and education activities help businesses, organisations and communities develop the innovative solutions and skills required to solve and confront global societal challenges.  Launched in October 2021, our new Strategy 2030 will utilise our outstanding education, research, and global connections to lead meaningful action against the climate emergency and ecological crisis; make key breakthroughs to transform human health and wellbeing; and shape progress towards creating a fair, socially just and inclusive society.

To help realise these ambitions, we are seeking to appoint a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Executive Divisional Director of Finance, Infrastructure & Commercial Services.  As a member of the University’s Executive Board (UEB) the CFO plays a key part in ensuring the continued success and overall direction of the University, with responsibility for sustainable financial management and the development and delivery of the University's capital, estates and commercial strategies. Ensuring that the University’s overall strategy is financed efficiently, effectively and sustainably is also key to the role.

We are seeking a strategic financial leader with a demonstrable track record of success in an appropriately large and complex organisation.  They will have experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams, delivering a wide range of services and will bring experience of innovation and driving cultural change in response to changing needs.  Highly analytical, with a strategic and commercial mindset, they will have excellent communication skills and the ability to navigate a complex and changing external landscape.

The University of Exeter is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and through this appointment process it is the University’s clear stated aim to develop candidate pools that include applicants from all backgrounds and communities.  The University particularly welcomes applications from women, people from black and minority ethnic communities, the LGBT+ community and from disabled people.

The closing date for expressions of interest is Friday 6th January 2023.
