Imperial College London is a global top ten university. Founded in 1907 in South Kensington, Imperial’s mission is to achieve enduring excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine and business for the benefit of society. Imperial provides one of the world’s best educations in STEM subjects for a student population approaching 22,000, over half of whom come from overseas, reflecting its status as the UK’s most international university. Its alumni and members also include 14 Nobel laureates and three Fields Medallists. The College has a turnover of £1,079m, 8,500 staff from around the world, was named University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and was ranked 6th in the QS World University Rankings 2023.

Throughout its history, the College has been involved in many major breakthroughs, including the discovery of penicillin and the creation of the hologram. This tradition has continued with recent innovations such as wirelessly transferring power to drones in flight, the discovery of a new form of light and major new research in climate change. Alongside Imperial’s locations in South Kensington and across London, the College has developed a new 20-acre campus in White City which is a platform for innovation, entrepreneurship, and multidisciplinary research which brings together world-class researchers, businesses and partners.

The Chief Operating Officer is a key member of the leadership team with an overall emphasis on strategy and commercial decision-making underpinned by our values. They will provide leadership across Finance, ICT, Campus Services, Commercial and Investment, Estates Operations and Development. Reporting directly to the President, they will contribute to the development and delivery of Imperial’s key strategic drivers during a period of significant opportunity and challenge for the global higher education sector. The incoming COO will bring demonstrable leadership success at a senior executive level and exposure to a non-executive board. A significant scale of strategic and operational management experience is essential. A strong intellect, empathy for the College’s mission, and the capacity to thrive in a professional services role within an academic community are vital.

The current unprecedented period of change in the higher education sector provides an opportunity for a creative and ambitious COO to play a critical role in helping shape the future of a national institution, ensuring its continued success on the global stage.
