Director of Research and Development (R&D) - Permanent - 120K base + benefits (Flexible/Hybrid working)

Change Digital have been retained by a market leading Tech SaaS business in their search for their Director of R&D in Edinburgh. What you will do:
Reporting into the CTO, the Group Director of R&D will provide technical and delivery vision, management and leadership for all Product Development functions and teams in the Group. The role directs the overall software development life cycle, technology and product related operations for the Group products and services. Working with the CTO you'll develop and implement the product technology roadmap to support the key objectives of cost effectiveness, delivery quality and product strategy.

Provide management, leadership, guidance, mentoring and career development to all product development staff in the group
Direct, manage and deliver product development programmes and projects through the application of consistent software development life cycle processes across the group's business units to ensure deliveries that are on-time, in-budget and to quality
Ensure that group product development teams focus on the commercial outcomes of their projects
Manage internal and external client expectations and customer satisfaction
Be responsible for the planning and management of all development software projects in terms of team and resource allocation, budgets, reporting and delivery
Be responsible for the measurement of quality for all products released within the field along with all associated strategies for asserting quality including both functional and non-functional
Have direct or indirect line management (as appropriate) of the senior technical leaders within the group
Work with the Technology People Business Partner to be responsible for defining the strategy for recruitment, development and ongoing performance for all product development employees within the group, ensuring appropriate guidance, support and coaching is provided if and when necessary.
Continuously assess and review the opportunity to transparently communicate product development activities to customers and the business incorporating but not limited to plans, release schedules, self-service/self-help tools, reporting
Attend on site customer meetings/presentations as and when requested

Skills, Knowledge & Experience required:
You will have a strong background working in a similar role with leadership of an R&D/Product Development team of circa 50-100 people. You will have spent significant periods within your career as a contributing member of a delivery team and will have experience of managing and leading groups of people successfully to deliver on defined outcomes. You'll be the go-to person to help get things done and will have an in-depth and thorough understanding of agile principles and techniques.
5+ year's experience of managing a team of software development teams of circa 50-100 people with technical support, build & deployment engineers and technical performance test engineers
Excellent knowledge of the associated technologies including .NET/C#, Java, PHP, SQL Server, mobile technologies and associated tool sets
Experience of delivering Cloud (Azure) based technologies is desirable, but not essential
Proven Experience of delivering Client Server, Web, SaaS and mobile products to market
Proven operational experience of managing different development approaches/methodologies ie, Agile/Scrum/Waterfall
Proven operational experience of running a large complex development operation supporting 10+ strategic product streams with differing technology stacks, ensuring management control, performance and quality is achieved
Operational Management of functional test teams is desirable but not essential
Advanced Project Management skills including planning, risk and issue management
Provide and communicate clear direction for the team which is in line with the organisation's goals, mission and values
Able to establish efficient and appropriate plans for self and others and adapt quickly and effectively to unexpected changes whilst still ensuring objectives are met
Understand and respond to customer needs (internal and external) and exceeds expectations where possible
Excellent Problem solving and decision-making skills/experience
Committed to obtaining results through taking responsibility, demonstrating a positive attitude and ensuring quality is always built into work.
