The Fellowship of King’s College seeks an exceptional individual as First Bursar to succeed Dr Keith Carne who retires in the Summer of 2022.

King’s is a constituent College of the University of Cambridge. Founded in 1441 by Henry VI as a place of education, religion, learning and research, the College comprises around 130 Fellows, 650 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 275 non-academic staff. King’s College is internationally recognised as a leading academic institution; its alumni and members have become world-leaders in academia, the arts, politics, science, and industry. The community at King’s is vibrant and diverse, priding itself on a friendly and inclusive atmosphere combining academic commitment with political engagement and a lively social and artistic scene.

The role of First Bursar is remarkably broad and complex. The role encompasses significant operational, financial and people leadership responsibilities. The incoming First Bursar will ensure the College’s long-term financial sustainability, including through the College’s broad and complex commercial activity, in order to advance King’s core academic mission of supporting young people through their education and enabling the Fellowship to conduct research. They will oversee current and future capital projects to ensure that the College’s Estate is well maintained. The First Bursar will inspire and empower College staff. They will build strong and trusted relationships across College, and will act as an excellent external ambassador for King’s.

The ideal candidate will be expected to demonstrate experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams, strong financial acumen and an enabling and entrepreneurial approach to financial leadership. They will be an excellent diplomat with a clear sense of personal integrity and patience. They will be able to inspire trust and confidence and to command the respect of the Fellowship, College staff, students and alumni.

King’s has been buffeted by the pandemic, but the underlying financial position is strong. This is an exciting time to join King’s as the College builds on initiatives already undertaken and develops new projects in line with its strategic goals and ambitions.

For further details on the role, please visit www.minervasearch.com/kings.  To apply, please send a covering letter and CV to kings@minervasearch.com  by noon on 21 February 2022. The successful candidate will take up the appointment over this summer, and no later than 1 October 2022.
