Your new role

As part of the senior management you will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to the internal design teams, consultant teams and external stakeholders across multi-faceted design and build contracts.

You will play a key role as a member of the senior leadership team where you will contribute in strategic planning, business decisions and be responsible for the overall performance of the design function.

A key part of the role will be to determine and establish the design and resourcing strategy for the business as well as reviewing key aspects of the design documentation for compliance, overseeing design programmes, and internal governance and mentoring programmes to meet the growth aspirations of the business.
  • Ensure Design Management resource is sufficient to deliver the design/BIM objectives to support the business needs and business plan.
  • Appointing competent design supply chain partners based on their competency and capacity. Develop metrics/KPI's to measure supply chain performance and issue reports periodically.
  • Audit the design to identify errors or divergence between the CP's and ER's. Regularly reviewing the IRS schedules to track the close out inconsistencies.
  • Ensure the business has adequate and competent resource to fulfil its obligations and duties as principal designer.
  • Manage allocated resources within projects using project design programmes/ RFI/IRS schedules, risk registers.
  • Identify and manage risk from drawings, specifications, design release dates, programmes and procurement.
  • Support the development of the contractor proposals and technical inputs required at pre construction.
  • Lead the DFMA workshops to continually review design standards within the business.

What you'll need to succeed
  • Strong inter-personal skills with good leadership and management abilities, capable of communicating effectively with all parts of the business and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to build and develop teams and coach others as required.
  • Good technical and design knowledge for both substructure and superstructure. Knowledge of MMC would be an advantage.
  • Able to establish, build, sustain and share strong, professional relationships with relevant groups both inside and outside the organisation. Driven to exceed client expectations.
  • Able to reason logically and apply a systematic process to finding solutions, proactive in responding to problems, able to apply sound logic in situations of ambiguity and problem solving.
  • Managing the design process using his/her commercial, contractual, programme/time awareness and technical expertise.
  • Ensuring the design process takes cognisance of current legislation, standards and codes of practice.
  • Ensuring design information is in line with design quality and cost and is in line with project timescales.
  • Ensure we fulfil the company requirements with regards to Project Designer role, through eliminating health and safety risks in the design and any commercial risks during the factory or onsite installation.
  • Strong understanding of commercial aspects of a design and build contracts JCT/NEC.
  • Demonstrable experience leading multi-faceted design and build teams across different market segments.
  • Able to present technical design elements to customers.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong leadership skills and team management.
  • Able to define strategy and solutions and contribute to the wider business.
  • Strong computer literacy skills (including Microsoft Office).
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams teams on large scale design and build contracts > £15m plus.
  • Sector experience to include Commercial, Education and Healthcare.
  • Strong IT Skills- Microsoft Packages and experience using BIM would be advantageous.
  • Qualifications: BSc Construction Management or relevant equivalent.
