Our client; a world class heavy engineering business; is currently looking for a Head of Engineering. The main responsibility of the role will be to work closely with the Senior Management team over the design process for the business at programme level.

The Head of Engineering is accountable to the Programme Director and the Programme Board for the delivery of engineering on the programme; with the authority to direct the engineering aspects of the programme.

You will be working on the client side and have the following responsibilities:
  • Overviewing the design work done by Tetratech and the Principal Contractor through RIBA Stages (1 to 7).
  • Ensuring the design meets all requirements
  • Ensuring design outputs are of a good quality
  • Ensuring the design represents good value for money
  • Ensuring the design remains consistent with previously approved RIBA Design Stages and where changes are proposed they continue to satisfy 1) to 4) above.
  • The reporting of and advice on engineering aspects to the Programme Board
  • The programme Design Authority in the intelligent customer role
  • The establishment and maintenance of an engineering team to deliver intelligent client capability to the programme (scope to be defined)
  • Takes engineering "ownership" of a project and directs the project to an optimised engineering solution, delivered in accordance with the programme engineering and stage gate processes.
  • To ensure that engineering standards and procedures are appropriate for the safe and efficient delivery of the programme.
  • The Head of Design supports the Project Manager in the successful delivery of all design aspects of the project.
  • Determine a safety led design gated process and engineering lifecycle maturity gates, with maturity targets aligned to the project's objectives and recorded in the appropriate project Engineering Management Plan
  • Advise Project Managers on engineering risk. Devise a plan to mitigate this risk.
  • Implementing the design configuration and ensuring, via controlled and authorised change, that the design configuration is declared and maintained.
  • Develop design work scope and support the development of an agreed strategy and plan to deliver the engineering aspects of the project.
  • Ensure that design reviews, optioneering workshops, value engineering workshops are held in accordance with the project Engineering Management Plan.
  • Review requirement plans as the design develops, supporting the requirements maturing process and achievability including formal review through the safety led gated engineering process.
  • Developing and executing effective design strategies and plans in line with the overall project strategies and plans e.g., Procurement Strategy, Project Controls Strategy, Programme Management Plan.
  • Ensure that design reviews at appropriate points agreed with the Project Manager.
  • Agreement and selection of a panel of reviewers having independence and subject matter expertise.
  • Ensure that any issues revealed by the design review that may affect other projects are formally and promptly identified and participate in the LFE process.
  • Sign the design review minutes to acknowledge any recommendations and/ or actions and ensure that these are enacted.
  • Conduct audits of design consultants.
  • Chair the End of RIBA Stage Report review and presentation.
