Our client, a FTSE 100 insurance business, is looking for an interim Group CFO to cover whilst they undertake a permanent search. This is a very broad role and the successful candidate must have a commercial, strategic outlooked underpinned by technical competence and will be a true partner to the CEO. This will be a twelve-month fixed term contract starting in early October.

Strategy & Planning 
  • Drive the financial planning and budgeting process, aligning the financial targets with the business strategy, setting the individual financial targets for each business unit, and monitoring performance against plan.
  • Influence the strategic direction and overall business and financial performance of the Group.
 Financial Reporting & Management Information
  • Lead the full-year and half-year reporting process, including the production of the annual report, ensuring that this is done in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide the Board with timely, accurate and well-analysed information and performance reporting. Provide insight to note key trends, issues and opportunities. Provide the Board with in-depth proposals regarding any potential financial transactions.
  • Direct accounting standards and practices to meet external financial, statutory, regulatory and audit obligations.
 Financial Control & Performance Management
  • Work with the Group CEO to deliver the financial targets and, as a member of the Executive Committee, ensure that the business and regional heads are held to account to deliver effective forecasting of income and meet the financial and cost targets of their unit(s).
  • Monitor the capital and liquidity position, ensuring that the latter is kept within acceptable ratios.
  • Ensure correct financial governance and a tight financial control environment, with effective forecasting and cost management across all legal entities. Implement any recommendations that are made by the internal or external auditors, to ensure a robust accounting and control environment. 
Tax & Treasury
  • Ensure adequate financial resources to fund the Group’s investment proposals within the constraints of sound financial management. Play a lead role in any debt or equity raising.
  • Ensure that cash is optimally managed, along with the treasury implications of multi-currency operations.
  • Optimise the Group’s tax charge while adopting a low-risk stance to successful challenge by the tax authorities.
Stakeholder Management
  • Represent the company and continue to strengthen relationships with external stakeholders, investors, regulators, advisors, investor relations, research analysts and the media where appropriate.
  • Act as the prime contact with the external Auditors and the Audit Committee. 
Risk Management
  • Work with the CRO to ensure that risks, and in particular financial risks, are proactively managed.
Development of the Finance Organisation
  • Establish and provide clear vision, direction and visible leadership to the function globally with frequent and open communication, ensuring that it is commercially focused and works in complete partnership with the business, driving financial and business performance.
  • Ensure that the competencies and skills of the Finance function are appropriate to their responsibilities and the needs of the business, continually building and developing a high calibre team and a sustainable pipeline of future finance leaders.
  • Act as a culture-bearer, ensuring that the conduct, values and goals set out by the Group CEO become embedded in the Finance function, as a best practice example.  

  • An experienced financial professional with an accountancy qualification and strong technical track record of reporting within a regulated environment.
  • Previous experience as a Group Chief Financial Officer, ideally of a listed company.  Insurance industry experience preferred.
  • A builder and leader of individuals and teams – highly skilled at motivating, developing and challenging others to get the best out of them.
  • A highly organised and efficient process manager, with the ability to combine the skills of planning and structure without been seen as bureaucratic.
  • Recent first-hand experience of working closely with a regulated body and managing the relationship on behalf of the organisation.
  • An open and communicative style with the ability to translate complex subject matter expertise to senior colleagues with clarity.
  • Highly results-driven, with the energy and determination to succeed where the pace of response and leadership is critical to success.
  • Open to change and driving continuous improvement in timeliness, accuracy and controllership through the core activities under their control.
  • Strong strategic planning skills – the ability to put financial and risk decisions into the context of the short, medium and long-term business needs.
