Job Details

Age UK is a national charity that directly supports and provides a voice for millions of older people every year, and with their wider Age UK network, also reaches communities at a local level up and down the country. Formed following the merger between Age Concern and Help the Aged in 2010, Age UK has steadily built its brand as the largest charity for and on behalf of older people and as it reaches the end of its current strategy journey, is ready to enter a new phase of its impact, development and growth.

Like all charities, the last 18 months have been a challenge for Age UK – the pandemic has served to shine an even stronger light on the importance of the work Age UK undertakes.   Whilst fundraising remained healthy and reflected the very high levels of public awareness of the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on older people, Age UK finances were impacted by the pandemic, especially its 258 strong retail estate which had to close its doors for much of the year. However, Age UK’s recovery plan has exceeded expectations thanks to the ongoing support of the public and its corporate partners, along with the hard work of Age UK’s retail colleagues, fundraising teams and trading company, Age Co. who have worked tirelessly over the last 12-18 months, often making difficult decisions to reduce its cost base, alongside maintaining vital services and responding to the increased demand for support it received.

Responsible for leading the Board and acting as a sounding board for the CEO and the Executive Team, this pivotal role will ensure the effectiveness of the Board of Trustees, set the highest possible standards of governance, and help to shape and review the strategic direction of Age UK as a national charity.  You will be fulfilling/have fulfilled a Non-Executive/Executive Chair role with experience gained in a related field i.e., health, social care, public sector, commercial social enterprise. Interest from candidates with a private sector background who can demonstrate an empathy, understanding or commitment to the needs of older people would also be welcome.  You will be able to evidence having played a pivotal role in steering an organisation through change and/or transformation (involving simplification of structures) and have a strong awareness of governance as it applies to a regulated working environment.  The ability to balance the needs of different stakeholder groups whilst having a clear understanding of the public interest agenda will be important.

A commitment to equality and diversity and the creation of an inclusive environment is paramount; and above all, you will share the Charity’s passion to effect change for older people in the UK.

To apply please submit a CV and short covering letter demonstrating how you meet the requirements of this role, quoting reference number JSWP6803 to rg@warrenpartners.co.uk   Alternatively, for an informal and confidential discussion please call our advising consultants – Ben Grove or Rupert Gibb - on 0845 261 0600.

All third party and direct applications will be forwarded to Warren Partners.
