Job Details

We are seeking an Associate Director for our National Engineering Policy Centre within our Policy and International Partnerships team.

Who are we?

The Royal Academy of Engineering is harnessing the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and an inclusive economy that works for everyone. In collaboration with our Fellows and partners, we’re growing talent and developing skills for the future, driving innovation and building global partnerships, and influencing policy and engaging the public. Together, we’re working to tackle the greatest challenges of our age.

With a diverse workforce and an inclusive and supportive culture, we look to attract candidates from wide and different backgrounds who have a passion for the role engineering plays in society. Our aim is to make the Academy the best place to work for the staff we have and those we seek to attract.

Why work for the Royal Academy of Engineering?

We’re looking for people who are driven to make the world a better place. If you’re passionate about what you do and want to work collaboratively with talented colleagues to make change happen now and for future generations, we want you to get in touch.

This is the perfect time to join us. We have a dynamic, visionary CEO, a strong leadership team and an ambitious and exciting strategy. The value we bring as experts in our field and change agents is highly recognised and makes the Academy a motivating place to be. Our work today builds on a long, proud history with a focused and ambitious future, which we’d love you to be part of.

We are looking for talented people who want to make a difference to join our team – is this you?

The role

As Associate Director, you will lead the work of the National Engineering Policy Centre at a hugely exciting time in its development.

You will lead your team to develop and deliver highly influential, evidence-based outputs on a range of policy issues. As an important figure within the Academy, you will collaborate with colleagues across the organisation to integrate work on skills, research, enterprise, and diversity and inclusion into a compelling overall programme. This will combine with international colleagues to maximise the policy impact of our extensive international programme.

You will be a genuine leader within the engineering profession, working inclusively and openly with partners to the Policy Centre to shape and contribute to the Centre’s work and strategy, delivering a programme which carries the authority and expertise of the whole profession.

You will grow the Academy’s ground-breaking work on systems approaches to policy challenges and drive our Policy Fellowships scheme; both areas where the Academy has distinctive and innovative offers and continues to develop new approaches to supporting better policy.

We are looking for someone who can build connections and collaborate across professional boundaries and who will proactively develop and nurture senior relationships with policy makers in UK, regional and devolved governments.

You will be an experienced and capable leader, comfortable with a high profile. You will be trusted by some of the country’s most senior and brilliant engineers, entrepreneurs, researchers and business leaders.

You will need the policy background and analytic skills to ensure the quality and excellence of our policy output. You should have a sincere concern for impact and for delivering public benefit and will drive strong evaluation of our work.

A commitment to diversity and inclusion, which permeates your work and that of your team, is essential.

The role reports to our Policy Director, Dr Nick Starkey, as part of the Policy and International Partnerships Directorate. You will manage a growing team of 12 people plus rolling secondees from academia and industry, with three direct reports.
