About Northern:

At Northern, we play a vital role across the North by providing a reliable and friendly train service that connects hundreds of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more. Our customers trust us with over 2,300 services every weekday, and we travel to almost 550 destinations.

But our vision is about more than just train travel. It’s about setting a new standard for customer experiences. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and get stuck in to making our customer’s lives easier. A place that goes out of its way to create incredible opportunities for everyone to grow and be the best we can be every single day.

So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.

About the role:

In this highly visible role and reporting to the Engineering Director, you’ll lead on the development and implementation of a range of initiatives aimed at improving the design and maintenance of our rolling stock. Leading our large and diverse technical support team, you’ll manage major fleet projects and performance enhancement schemes, and make sure we comply with industry standards and legislation.

Day to day, you’ll focus on creating and implementing a safety based technical strategy and broadening our technical capability and knowledge to help future-proof our business. We’ll also look to you to introduce and embed a brand-new maintenance philosophy. And as a key contact and relationship partner, you’ll advise, support and guide a range of key functions across the business.

About you:

You’ll have full authority to determine Engineering standards across Northern, which means you’ll need to be a Chartered Engineer with an extensive knowledge and experience of the kind of rail vehicles we operate. Management qualifications and an understanding of rules, regulations and technical standards would be useful. But what’s most important is that you have at least 5 years’ management experience, along with the ability to build strong relationships as you lead and inspire your team to continually improve the way we work.

You’ll have the professional gravitas and credibility to build positive and productive relationships with all external stakeholders and oversight bodies.

Benefits and Rewards:

•   Free Travel on Northern services for you and your family*

•   75% discount on all other Train Operating Companies leisure services*

•   Pension Scheme

•   A generous holiday entitlement

•   Maternity and Paternity Benefits - above the statutory minimum

•   And many more!

Our selection process is designed to make joining Northern as smooth as possible. It helps us decide whether you’re the right person to deliver a great service to our customers. And it can also help you make sure we’re the right team for you, too.

Northern is an equal opportunities employer and a promoter of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

If you’re ready to join a workplace where you can focus on being yourself and being your best, we’d love to hear from you. Whoever you are and whatever your background, there’s a great chance that you’ll fit right in at Northern.
