About Northern:

At Northern, we play a vital role across the North by providing a reliable and friendly train service that connects hundreds of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more. Our customers trust us with over 2,300 services every weekday, and we travel to almost 550 destinations.

But our vision is about more than just train travel. It’s about setting a new standard for customer experiences. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and get stuck in to making our customers’ lives easier. A place that goes out of its way to create incredible opportunities for everyone to grow and be the best we can be every single day.

So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.

About the role:

Join us in this role and you’ll have a significant impact across our Engineering business as you take full responsibility for two of our Engineering depots, Newton Heath in Manchester and Allerton in Liverpool. Ultimately, it’s about making sure the right trains to the right specification can reach the right locations at the right times. That means taking the lead when it comes to the overall improvement strategy for all train maintenance and depot practices, with the aim of improving delivery output, business resilience and production delivery.

Reporting to the Engineering Director and leading a team of Engineering Rail professionals from multiple sites and depots, you’ll spend your time focusing on improving performance, while delivering an excellent service for customers and communities. Day to day, you’ll also lead on our programme of business change, make sure our workforce is fit for the future, and partner with other Northern directors to advise and support teams from across the business.

As the fleet manager for several fleets of trains serviced by your depots, you’ll be responsible for the deployment and performance of the fleet in service. Ensuring our trains fulfil the daily mission safely, reliably and consistently is key to the success of this role.

About you:

You’ll need significant senior level experience in an operational or engineering environment, and a background in managing multiple sites across a broad area. With a strong business acumen, you’ll have expertise in production management, the ability to implement and deliver results along with a passion for delivering culture change and transformation.

A strategic thinker, a confident communicator, and an influential leader, you’re the kind of person who can identify opportunities for genuine change - and translate them into projects that really deliver.

Benefits and Rewards:

•   Free Travel on Northern services for you and your family*

•   75% discount on all other Train Operating Companies leisure services*

•   Pension Scheme

•   A generous holiday entitlement

•   Maternity and Paternity Benefits - above the statutory minimum

•   And many more!

Our selection process is designed to make joining Northern as smooth as possible. It helps us decide whether you’re the right person to deliver a great service to our customers. And it can also help you make sure we’re the right team for you, too.

Northern is an equal opportunities employer and a promoter of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

If you’re ready to join a workplace where you can focus on being yourself and being your best, we’d love to hear from you. Whoever you are and whatever your background, there’s a great chance that you’ll fit right in at Northern.

The first thing you need to do is complete our online application form and tell us a little bit more about yourself. Once we have all your details, we’ll be in touch to let you know what happens next.
