The East Sussex Safeguarding Adults Board (ESSAB) is seeking to recruit an Independent Chair to provide leadership and strategic vision, and to build on and enhance the current strong partnership arrangements to support the ESSAB in fulfilling its functions and strategic priorities.

The role of Independent Chair requires an outstanding individual with enthusiasm, commitment and determination to drive forward the adult safeguarding agenda in East Sussex. You will have experience of leading and managing in a large public, independent or voluntary sector organisation at a senior level, proven experience of chairing complex partnership meetings and have extensive knowledge and experience of applying the legislation and guidance in relation to safeguarding adults. You will ensure that the ESSAB operates effectively to deliver its key objectives and functions as set out in the Care Act (2014).

Importantly, you will have the confidence to provide independent, constructive challenge to ESSAB partners and organisations in order to bring about improved outcomes for adults at risk of abuse or neglect. You will also actively promote engagement with adults who need care and support, your families, and advocates, to ensure their voices are heard and acted upon within the Board’s work.

It is anticipated that this role will require up to a maximum of 24 days per annum. The specific commitment required will be agreed as part of the appointment process and is open to negotiation. The daily rate will be £600 per day including any travel costs. The arrangement will be for an initial period of 2 years with an annually renewable contract subject to six months’ notice by either side.

Please note that the Independent Chair will be paid on a consultancy basis. Duties and IR35 rules apply to this appointment. Payments will be made through payroll and tax and NI deductions will be made at source via PAYE in line with current HMRC guidelines.

For an informal discussion, please contact Mark Stainton (Director of Adult Social Care) at mark.stainton@eastsussex.gov.uk
