Harrow School

An independent boarding school for boys aged 13 to 18

CORPORATION DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Harrow School is situated in Harrow on the Hill in north-west London and is one of the best-known schools in the world. Around 830 boys study at Harrow and live in the School’s 12 boarding houses. Employees particularly value the School’s beautiful green estate, the positive working environment, and good relationships with their colleagues.

On the retirement of the current Director of Finance and Systems, we invite applications for the post of Corporation Director of Finance with effect from August 2021. In addition to being the Director of Finance for Harrow School, the incumbent will also have wider financial responsibilities across the Corporation which includes the John Lyon School and, more recently, Quainton Hall, plus two trading subsidiary limited companies, Harrow International Schools Limited and Harrow School Enterprises Limited. The Corporation’s consolidated accounts also include the Harrow Development Trust, which is a fundraising charity whose objects include helping Harrow School to achieve its strategic objectives.

All in all, the Corporation generates annual income of about £60m, with operations overseas as well as in the UK.

The post-holder will be a key member of the Bursar’s Management Group, with day-to-day responsibility for financial management across a broad range of areas, including accounting, treasury management and investments.  Managing a team of 8 direct reports and supporting a wider team of 6, it will be important that this person is not only technically outstanding, but also an effective leader. This is a role which interfaces with both governors and senior management of the Corporation’s entities.

Candidates will have outstanding financial and accounting capabilities and experience, together with strong interpersonal and communication skills. The ideal candidate will also be comfortable with complexity and a busy and varied workload. Prior experience of working in a school is not essential, but an interest in education and the development of young people is important.

Closing date:  14 April 2021
