Investment companies are the oldest form of collective investment. They help investors expand and diversify their portfolios, access a wide range of asset classes, benefit from economies of scale, spread risk and access expertise. The AIC is the trade body for the industry. It represents a broad range of closed-ended investment companies, incorporating investment trusts, offshore investment companies, REITs and Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs). It represents over 360 companies with assets of £221bn, which is over 90% of the sector by assets.

The AIC helps its members by lobbying regulators and policy makers, promoting and generating interest in the sector, providing technical advice and guidance, delivering events and training, co-ordinating and publishing a range of performance data, news and information. Based in London, the AIC has a staff of 22 and an annual budget of c.£5m.

The current Chief Executive, Ian Sayers, is expected to step down at the end of 2021, and has led the AIC through a period of huge market and regulatory change. The pace of change in the external environment is unlikely to slacken; post-BREXIT regulation, member approach to ESG, and how the sector positions itself relative to open-ended funds and as a provider of access to alternative asset classes all provide potential opportunity for the sector, for shareholders and for the public good.

The AIC is looking for a Chief Executive able to build a collaborative partnership with the Board and some of the most influential voices in the sector. They will further develop an excellent existing team and support them to build expertise and have impact in a sector full of technical considerations and changing regulation. They will widen influence, reputation and relationships through the next stage of the AIC and the sector’s development.
