English Heritage cares for over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places - from world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, from Roman forts on the edges of an empire to a Cold War bunker. We aim to create inspiring and enjoyable experiences for everyone at our sites, online and in print, enabling people of all ages and backgrounds to share in and pass on the story of England.

We made a bold transition in April 2015 to become a charitable organisation. We are on a pathway to full independence from Government and, although this Covid-affected year has been a setback, we remain fully committed to that goal. In our first five years we have completed more than 20 major capital investment projects. We have built new facilities for visitors, installed innovative interpretation, conserved buildings and restored significant historic gardens. We have enormously expanded our digital offerings. We have supported over 1.2 million educational visits to our sites.

We now have two vacancies to join our Board as Trustees and are seeking individuals who will help to support our highly skilled workforce in bringing further pleasure and understanding to our millions of members and other visitors to our sites.

Our first vacancy is for an individual with strategic philanthropy and fundraising experience. As we emerge from the pandemic, and as our financial support from government diminishes, we need to continue to strengthen our fundraising capability, reaching out to donors around the world to support our work. To that end we’re seeking an exceptionally high-calibre Trustee with significant experience of networking and engagement with philanthropic communities and individuals.

For our second vacancy, we are particularly interested to hear from those with a background in one or more of the following areas:

  • Strategic Finance
  • Digital
  • Education
  • Political influencing and lobbying
