Crafts Council
Chair
Unremunerated

The dynamic energy, confidence and ambition of the craft sector has never been more apparent.  There is a growing interest and popularity of making and the handmade in all its forms – ranging from the traditional to the contemporary – apparent on our high streets and in our media.  From the fashion for traditional tailoring to the growing market for secondary sales of contemporary ceramics and from knitting circles to high -tech maker labs more people are exploring, buying, using and making craft.

In 2020 society has faced unprecedented challenges and craft has shown its value with many volunteers making scrubs for the NHS and craft making at home during lockdown has provided solace to many thousands of people.

Our priorities are to promote social justice through craft; and to support economic recovery in the sector and beyond. Our organisational resilience, creating impact nationally and internationally, will be key to achieving these aims.

Level-headed, calm under pressure and with senior-level experience, you’ll bring a breadth of vision and a strong grasp of complex governance issues. You’ll need to demonstrate a track record of fostering organisational transition and change management. You’ll also have a keen understanding of how governance needs to adapt to better respond to the challenges faced by a modern, multi-faceted organisation. Used to dealing with great complexity, your incisive judgement will assist the Board and Executive to take key decisions with confidence, insight and clarity.

You will be joining an excellent, committed, values-driven Board full of integrity, good humour and intellectual versatility. To lead it and inspire an exciting and inclusive debate, you must possess empathy, emotional intelligence and first rate influencing skills.
