Help Musicians
Chair

In 1921 celebrated English tenor Gervase Elwes died in a railway accident while touring the USA at the height of his career. He was known not only for his musical talent but also for his concern and support for fellow musicians. His friends, led by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, founded the charity Help Musicians (known for many decades as the Musicians Benevolent Fund) to continue these charitable aims in his honour. Now in its centenary year, the charity continues to provide a lifetime of support when it’s needed most to professional musicians right across the U.K.

Committed to doing all it can to make a meaningful difference to the lives of musicians, the charity constantly adapts its range of help and support as musicians’ needs change –  supporting musicians’ creative development, business skills and health & welfare needs. In 2020, Help Musicians saw a huge rise in musicians seeking its support as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, with over 20,000 musicians of all genres receiving financial help as a result of hardship. With no sign yet of when live music will return, the need for financial, mental health, business development and creative support on a larger scale will continue to ensure that musicians can recover from this crisis and return to sustainable careers.

Help Musicians takes a collaborative approach to the way it delivers and innovates; through partnerships with organisations within and outside the music industry, and specific research projects to develop a greater understanding of the issues and challenges musicians face to adapt and improve the range of help available.

Help Musicians are currently seeking a new chair to play a key role in developing the charity’s strategy with the Board and the CEO for the next decade. This is an exciting time to join a charity that, in its centenary year, has never been more relevant to the community of professional musicians across the U.K.

Skilled in strategic development, leading a diverse Board, influencing, advocacy, and communication you will have an appreciation of the importance of the music profession to the creative life of the UK and a commitment to creating a world where musicians thrive.

As an organization that fully understands the increased impact that results from diverse perspectives, Help Musicians are committed to ensuring the board reflects the diversity of the UK music scene. As such, they actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.
