Job Details

Camden is an amazing place; vibrant, diverse, radical and ambitious. It is home to some of the most innovative and creative organisations in the country but also has some of the poorest communities and profound inequalities. We are therefore determined that Camden should be “a place where everyone has a chance to succeed, no one is left behind, and everyone has a voice” (Camden 2025).

But we know we have deep inequalities. 39% of our children grow up in poverty, and our residents from disadvantaged backgrounds are likely to live 20 years in poorer health than their wealthier neighbours.

Good health helps people to live a full and rewarding life. It is more than an absence of disease and illness – it is about physical, mental and social wellbeing. Access to high-quality services that support people when they are ill is vital. But so much of what makes a difference is about wider factors, such as the housing people live in, how easy it is to make good choices about diet and exercise, and the financial security and wellbeing that rewarding work provides.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its unequal impacts have exposed how deeply entrenched the inequalities are within our communities and how this can have a differential impact on health outcomes. There is an ever more significant role for the Council and Public Health in protecting and improving the health of our communities.

As the Director of Public Health for Camden you will play a pivotal role in helping us respond to this challenge by developing our health improvement strategies that specifically address the determinants of health. You will assess and improve the health of the people of Camden by working with our partners in the NHS, the public sector and with communities.

You will ensure services are delivered in line with statutory requirements. As the principal adviser to the Health and Wellbeing Board you will support the development and progression of our Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

You will be reporting directly to the Chief Executive and be a member of the Corporate Management Team, supported by an exceptionally strong public health team shared with Islington Council. You will have specific responsibility to collaborate with the DPH of Islington and ensure that the shared service is working well for both boroughs and to take specific responsibility for the management of agreed functions within the department.
