Job Details

Director of People and Safeguarding
The Diocese of Bristol
Church of England

The Diocese of Bristol is the Church of England for over one million people living across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, north Wiltshire and Swindon. The central team supports the churches, church schools and networks of faith across the region. It has a particular responsibility for over 200 clergy who hold an ecclesiastical office throughout these communities and about 50 employed staff working predominantly in that team.

As a diocese, Bristol has been on the leading edge of some of the issues the Church of England has faced up to in recent decades and was the first diocese to ordain women as priests and to declare a climate emergency. The diocese has been willing to learn from outside the Church and has sought robustly to address their failings in relation to safeguarding and racial justice. The Diocese of Bristol continue to learn and grow and face new and unprecedented challenges as we all live through and emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic. Both the Diocese and national Church of England are discerning a new strategy of vision and priorities for the 2020s.

The Diocese of Bristol now seek to appoint an exceptional individual to the newly created post of Director of People and Safeguarding. Leading a small team you will play a key part in developing and delivering the strategy to support that vision - identifying and planning the people needs that meet the strategic requirements and working with others across the organisation to help make them a reality. You will be joining an energetic and collaborative senior team that has been brought together under the leadership of Bishop Viv Faull over the last two years. The central staff team is full of gifted people who go the extra mile out of their motivation to serve others and make a transforming difference in their communities. The people and safeguarding teams play a critical role is ensuring that the Diocese is safe and empowering place for all people to flourish.

Candidates for this role are likely to have significant human resource experience in a senior management role across a complex organisation, with a demonstrable track record of developing people strategy, including working with volunteers. Experience of leading and delivering on organisational change, strategic development, equity and inclusion, cultural change and the management and operation of safeguarding practices are all highly desirable. Individuals will hold CIPD or equivalent membership and be able to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a senior team. Candidates will need to be fully supportive of the Christian objectives and ethos of Church of England
