Job Details

Wilmslow (other locations may be considered)

The Information Commissioners Office is the UK’s independent regulator of information rights. The ICO’s Headquarters is in Wilmslow, Cheshire with additional offices based in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh & London which offers applicants some flexibility of office base.

About us

As an independent body serving the public, the ICO’s work is interesting and immensely rewarding – it’s of national importance and increasingly in the public eye. We hold a unique position as a regulator across the whole of the private, public and third sectors, overseeing 12 pieces of legislation.

The ICO is at the forefront of upholding the UK’s Data Protections and Freedom of Information laws, as well as providing advice and support to organisations and the public.

We are involved with important issues ranging from privacy implications of the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of the newly published National Data Strategy, and how appropriate access to data can positively support environmental protection. We are growing and developing as an organisation to meet these needs, and this role offers applicants an opportunity to join in a leadership role with a national profile in the cyber security space.

About the role

This is both an operational and ambassadorial role of national profile. You will help ensure that the ICO has the technical capacity and capability to promote good practice in cybersecurity and to support our incident and investigative responses to resolve cybersecurity breaches in a robust way, as well as ensuring we are aligned with partner organisations in this space such as the NCA Cyber Crime Unit, National Cyber Security Centre, NIS Competent Authorities and the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport.

You will work with other ICO leaders to develop training, advice services and roles across our organisation to improve our technical expertise and awareness.

Externally, you will work with stakeholders in the technology sector and act to encourage and support compliance by regulated organisations in the private and public sectors.

You will also lead the ICO’s input to the UK cybersecurity strategy to protect the UK against threats such as hacking, ransomware, and the disruption of services that threaten the safety of our critical national infrastructure.

About you

For this critically important role we require significant operational management experience in a technology focussed role – particularly of managing technology security issues, ideally with a data or service operations component or equivalent. You will also demonstrate experience of analysing complex operational and technical information to produce considered reports, forecasts, advice and plans.

You will have full life cycle experience of leading significant change projects from concept to sign off. Knowledge of the regulatory environment would also be helpful.

How to apply

Please upload a copy of your CV along with a covering letter which explains both why you are attracted to this post and why you are the right person for us. Please limit your covering letter to no more than two pages. For further information and to apply please visit:

We would particularly like to encourage applications from women and from people who are from a BAME background, who are currently under-represented at a senior level within our organisation.
