Non-executive Trustee Director of the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology CLG with particular interest in leadership of people, culture and change.

Humans depend on nature and are changing nature. At the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) we seek to understand the environment, how it sustains life, and the human impact on it – so that together, people and nature can prosper. This unique non-executive role enables you to use your strategic HR experience to make a tangible, long-term positive difference to environmental resilience.

The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is an independent, not-for-profit research institute carrying out excellent environmental science with impact. Our 500 scientists work to understand the environment, how it sustains life, and the human impact on it. We provide the data and insights that governments, businesses and researchers need to create a productive, resilient and healthy environment. Scientific curiosity, integrity and transparency are at the heart of how we work.

Very few organisations are able to assemble such a highly regarded group of experts. In turn, the challenge of attracting, developing and retaining talent, and of ensuring that we realise our collective potential, is an absorbing and nuanced one. This non-executive Trustee Director role will advise and support our board and executive team, helping us to identify new approaches and innovations that support us to deliver our vital mission. Our recent move to independence, after many years under the aegis of UKRI and its predecessor bodies, offers an exceptional chance to consolidate and renew our people strategies and practices, and we are currently recruiting a Director for People and Operations who will lead on this work.

Candidates will bring extensive knowledge and experience of how people leadership, culture and communication enables organisational performance, and must themselves have outstanding influencing and communication skills. Board and/or senior executive experience in the private or not for profit sectors is essential, and particular strengths in safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion will be a distinctive asset. The successful candidate will chair the Remuneration and Appointments Sub-Committee (RASC), so knowledge of pay and reward policy is essential. Collaborative, values-led and able to apply a range of knowledge and experience to make the most of emerging scenarios, you’ll have a clear focus on outcomes. Finally, diversity of perspectives, background and insight are invaluable in our work, and we would particularly like to hear from candidates whose professional and personal profiles will bring us new understanding and capacity.

If you want to be part of our work in understanding, mitigating and adapting to a changing environmental future, follow the 'Apply button' to find out more. For a confidential, informal conversation, please contact Shani Newbold at Cadence Partners on +44 20 7947 4960 or email ukceh-trustee@cadencepartners.co.uk

Closing date: 15 November 2020. Initial interviews: w/c 23 November 2020. Final interview: w/c 7 December 2020.
