Job Details

An experienced executive and strategic thinker with a passion for music, this is your opportunity to support the ongoing development of an iconic conservatoire.

The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) is a leading international conservatoire located in the heart of Manchester, with a reputation for attracting talented students and teachers from all over the world.

Now in its fifth decade, the RNCM is relatively young, but its rich history spans back to 1893 when Sir Charles Hallé founded the Royal Manchester College of Music (RMCM). Today, the College is a thriving establishment delivering world-renowned music education and training to some 900 students from 60 different countries, indeed it is the UK’s top conservatoire, a vibrant arts centre educating and training musicians to the highest professional level, in a stimulating and innovative environment.

RNCM operate a high caliber Board consisting of 12 independent members. As part of the Board’s succession planning, and to support the delivery of the College’s new Strategic Plan and future success, RNCM is now seeking to appoint a highly driven, forward-looking Non-Executive Director / Governor to commence in 2021. The successful candidate will bring profile and senior executive level expertise, ideally, either finance, legal, digital, or general management; and may include the experience of popular music.

Committed governors are crucial to the College’s current and future success and this role provides an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of the College. You will bring insight, guidance, and support to the Board in relation to both finance and management, enabling informed decisions to be taken which are in the long-term interests of the College and aligned to its vision and values.

Your involvement will help to drive exciting new opportunities in music and education whilst further raising RNCM’s profile amongst the diverse stakeholders and communities it serves.

A pro bono appointment, Governors are attracted to the Conservatoire by their interest in making difference to this purpose-led organisation and benefit from access to the circa 450 performances which the College hosts. The time commitment consists of 10 Board meetings per annum, together with an annual strategy day, in addition to attendance at key College performances and social events.

With a track record of successful strategic contribution in a significant and relevant leadership role at the board level (possibly but not necessarily as Non-Executive Director), you will have a genuine passion for sustaining and developing one of the North West's key cultural organisations on the national and international stage.  A collaborative leader with strong influencing and communication skills, you will be able to question constructively and support the delivery of strategy, whilst satisfying yourself regarding risk and performance monitoring.

We are passionate about equal opportunities and welcome a broad diversity of talent to apply. Indeed RNCM is keen to broaden the diversity of the Board to ensure it best represents and connects with the communities they touch across classical and pop music.

Please reply to Victoria Gee by clicking “Apply” to send your CV, quoting reference number VCLB6219.  Alternatively please call 0845 261 0600. All third party and direct applications will be forward to Warren Partners.
