Founded in 1624, Pembroke is one of the most friendly and dynamic of the Oxford Colleges, based on a central site that joins award-winning new developments with historic quadrangles. Pembroke’s Fellowship is forward-looking and its Governing Body has ambitious plans for the future.

The Bursar is a Fellow of the College and a member of its Governing Body. The role focuses on financial management, property and other investments at both a strategic and operational level, and on regulatory compliance. There is, however, much more to the job than that of finance director: the Bursar will play a wide-ranging role across the College, in strategy development, in the delivery of some ambitious capital projects, and with a contribution to make in just about every aspect of College life.

Reporting to the Master and working closely with other College officers, the Bursar will be supported by the College Accountant and a small finance team, and by a range of external advisers. As a member of a small team of College officers supporting busy academic colleagues, the Bursar needs a readiness to get involved in a wide range of often operational management issues.

Applicants will need broad business experience, specifically including financial management at a senior level. A recognised accountancy qualification is desirable but not essential. Experience of leading capital projects would be helpful, as would exposure to charity regulation, though neither is essential.

Very strong relationship skills are vital, along with the ability to deploy business experience in a collegiate and collaborative manner with Governing Body colleagues. As well as a clear commitment to supporting the College’s academic mission, the Bursar will need sophisticated influencing skills, a willingness to listen to the views of others, and a readiness to compromise. A practical mind set and a willingness to turn a hand to challenges outside the scope of a traditional CFO job is essential.

This is a busy job offering the chance to take an active role in delivering the College’s ambitious plans for the future. It will appeal to senior, yet still energetic, individuals who will enjoy playing a full part in the life of the College.
