Stockport Grammar School was founded in 1487 by Sir Edmund Shaa, a distinguished Goldsmith and Lord Mayor of London. The school moved to its present site on the southern outskirts of Stockport in 1916, the new buildings being financed by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, with which close ties still exist. Stockport Grammar has been independent since 1975, and co-educational since 1980. There are approximately 1400 pupils across the school community, as well as a nursery. Occupying a single site, the Junior School, Senior School, and Sixth Form draw talented pupils from a large catchment area that includes Stockport, South Manchester, North Cheshire, and Derbyshire.

Governors are now looking to appoint an exceptional Bursar to join the school. There are over 150 non-teaching staff including part-time and casual staff. The Bursar directly line-manages the Assistant Bursar, Site Manager, Catering Manager, Maintenance Manager, Head Groundsman, Development, Administration, and ICT Staff. The Bursar will have management of the school’s finances to ensure its long term financial and operational stability, as well as acting as Clerk to the governing body.

Candidates will need to have successful leadership experience in a senior position in a complex professional structure, managing, organising and motivating multi-disciplinary teams including successfully developing strategy and managing change. You should have a genuine interest in and sensitivity to the school’s purpose of education and a willingness/ability to understand and be involved in the wider life of the school. Professional qualifications in finance or accounting would be desirable.
