Job Details

Contract Type: This role is offered as a 3-year fixed term opportunity with the option to extend for a further year, and is available for full-time, or flexible working arrangements (including pre-existing job share partnerships).

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is one of Whitehall’s newest departments.  They have overall responsibility for developing, coordinating, and delivering a new trade and investment policy for the UK, including preparing for and negotiating Free Trade Agreements and market access with non-EU countries, and promoting UK trade and investment across the world.

As one of the nine global regions, operating in 108 countries, the China and Hong Kong Region is DIT’s largest overseas network. Hong Kong has long been a key international trade hub and financial centre crucial to the world economy. Its financial sector continues to thrive and is heavily dominated by British companies. Hong Kong’s success is now increasingly dependent on the Chinese economy with many companies here focused on Mainland business and seeking to benefit from the significant Chinese capital outflows coming out via Hong Kong.

The Director of Trade and Investment Hong Kong will be responsible for supporting and advising senior trade stakeholders and CEOs of large UK companies as to ways of improving market access in Hong Kong and Macao. This role will also be responsible for leading a team that supports Capital Investment and Foreign Direct Investment projects into the UK.

The Department of Trade and Industry is looking for an experienced and successful senior leader who has worked in complex and demanding environments. You must be able to evidence a first-class understanding of international trade and investment from experience gained either inside or outside government as well as experience of building successful business relationships and strategic contact networks at a very senior level. Experience of working in Hong Kong, China, or Asia would also be highly desirable.
