Director, Road Safety, Standards and Services

Department of Transport (DfT)

At the Department of Transport (DfT), we aim to connect people and places in a way that is safe, reliable and sustainable. Our work is dynamic and challenging, affecting almost everyone who lives in this country almost every day.  We, support a freight sector which is critical to the effective functioning of the whole of the economy and society - schools, businesses and hospitals.

We are looking for an energetic and talented Director  to join our senior team within the Roads, Places and Environment Group in the Department.  Our new Director will lead work on road safety and motoring and will lead across boundaries to ensure that our future road and freight transport systems are fit for purpose now and into the future.

The transport sector is changing fast, and this role offers considerable scope and scale to drive that change.  You will lead work on the regulation of the motoring and freight sectors, seeking to achieve continuing improvements in road safety, more responsive motoring services, and a successful and sustainable freight sector.  You will lead relationships with the Department for Transport’s motoring agencies, and will manage both the Government Car Service and the Transport and Works Act Order Unit.

In terms of experience, you’ll be experienced in leading and developing a diverse and high performing team in a public policy environment.  Knowledge of the transport sector would be an advantage.  But just as much, we’re looking for energetic, multi-skilled leaders who enjoy working at pace. You’ll be able to handle challenging and ever-changing projects and deliver outcomes while managing a complex network of stakeholders. You should also have experience collaborating with a wide range of people and organisations.

At DfT, we offer our teams an excellent benefits package, including generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, as well as an employee discount scheme. We also offer a range of networking opportunities, coaching schemes from quality providers, as well as strong learning and development programmes.
