Director of Finance

Manchester

Competitive salary

The University of Manchester is a leading, research-intensive, Russell Group university that delivers significant public benefit. We conduct world-class, ground-breaking research into some of society’s biggest challenges and are committed to transforming the well-being of the communities we serve. Our 40,000 students enjoy tuition that is innovative, academically rigorous and geared towards their future employability. The University's Manchester Museum, John Rylands Library and the Whitworth are among the city’s cultural landmarks, while our iconic Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire has just been named the UK's newest UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our annual income – from tuition fees, research grants, commercial activities and other sources – is in excess of £1 billion. We have long-term commercial relationships with leading global organisations, including Rolls-Royce, the BBC, Siemens UK, Colgate Palmolive, Unilever and GSK, and since 2004 we have delivered some £750 million to the economy through innovation and spin-out activity. Our ten-year Campus Masterplan, one of the largest capital programmes in UK higher education, has transformed our estate and is nearing completion. We are now embarking on ID Manchester, a £1.5 billion international development partner opportunity that will deliver a new, world-class innovation district in the heart of Manchester.

We are looking for an outstanding Director of Finance to succeed Steve Dauncey and to continue to build on our strong financial position. As a key member of the University’s senior leadership team and director of our commercial subsidiaries, you will bring demonstrable leadership success at a senior executive level and exposure to a non-executive board. Significant scale of strategic and operational management experience, plus a broad financial and commercial skill set, are essential. You will be robust and resilient, with a strong intellect and the capacity to thrive in a professional services role within an academic community. We are looking for individuals who are entrepreneurial and innovative, with a track record of achieving significant business outcomes in either a private or public sector organisation.
