Winchester College is one of the world’s leading academic boarding schools. Dr Tim Hands became Headmaster in August 2016, and he is leading a Strategic Development Programme designed to build on the School’s existing strengths and further develop its position as a world-class learning community.
Steven Little will retire in 2020 after 21 years of distinguished service to the College. Winchester seeks a successor as Bursar to provide strong strategic, financial and operational leadership. The appointee will ensure that Winchester continues to have robust finances and outstanding support services, including by anticipating the future needs of the School. As a key contributor to whole school decision-making, the new Bursar will also serve on the Senior Management Committee and as Clerk to the Governing Body. He or she will become Bursar at a time when the place of independent education in Britain is under increasing scrutiny – not least the issue of delivering public benefit, as all charities are required to do.
The successful candidate will be a thoughtful, visible, and adaptable leader, possessing the interpersonal subtlety, diplomacy and organisational insights to lead a high performing organisation. He or she will demonstrate a record of strategic leadership and management experience at a high level with outstanding communication skills, and an ethos of continuous improvement. Financial qualifications are desirable but not essential. Winchester welcomes those with commercial, non-profit and public sector backgrounds.
