The Organisation

The National Football Museum is the leading football museum in the world, holding the world's greatest collection on the history of football. A museum of national and international significance, is it also a major tourist attraction for the city of Manchester, attracting over 250,000 visitors per year from across the UK and around the world.

The National Football Museum's strategic four year vision is to be a leading national museum with one million visitors by 2022. In 2017 a new Chair and Chief Executive were appointed. This presented the opportunity to review how the museum has performed as a charity and a business, whilst ensuring the museum becomes a world class visitor experience.

The Role

  • With the CEO, lead the delivery of the strategic plan, ensuring that the organisation maintains a consistent direction. Advise the CEO, Board and Directors on key strategic issues and support long term decision making. Develop the financial model to deliver the strategic plan, including the annual budget. 
  • Build a high performing finance function that supports the museum with quality and timely financial reporting and management information, and meets all statutory reporting requirements for charities (SORP) and submission of VAT returns. Ensure all financial management systems are fit for purpose and will support the growth of the organisation. 
  • Credibly represent the museum in managing relationships with the bank, auditors, MCC and other major funders. Attend Board meetings and Finance & Audit Committee meetings to present financial reports.
  • The Candidate
  • A leader, who can motivate, develop and manage the finance function. They will also be a leader of the wider organisation and be able to deputise for the Chief Executive when required and represent the organisation credibly to key stakeholders.
  • A CCAB finance qualification - ideally chartered, from a top four practice with strong technical financial skills that will ensure robust financial management and control of the organisation.
  • The business acumen to capitalise on commercial opportunities and negotiate contracts, driving income and profitability for the organisation.
