Job Details

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a unique investment management organisation that is seeking to establish best practice in areas such as responsible investment, investment risk management, private market investing, cost efficiency and transparency. Our progress in our first two years has been built on clear values, a strong culture and well-defined investment principles, and we have already established a reputation and influence beyond our immediate partners. This role will build on this progress and lead Brunel Pension Partnership Limited (Brunel) through the next stage of our development.

Brunel is an investment management company which manages the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) Funds of Avon, Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, the Environment Agency, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset and Wiltshire. We are owned by these clients. The collective assets of the pool are approximately £30billion and Brunel invests across the range of asset classes, primarily through outsourced investment management relationships, but retains responsibility for manager selection and monitoring, product development as well as some discretionary management to implement client strategies.

Reporting to the Chair, the CEO is a board-level position, and an FCA Significant Influence Function.

The CEO will work closely with the Board to implement and further develop the agreed strategy, leading the firm to ensure that all functions in the business deliver effectively to provide investment management services to its Clients. The role has four main direct reports with circa 40 staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day management of the Company, leading and managing the Company’s senior management team (including setting roles, responsibilities and objectives and monitoring/assessing the team against these) whilst respecting executive responsibility
  • Implementing and promoting Brunel’s strategy, culture, direction and business plan, within agreed budgets and subject to the approval of the Board
  • Building and maintaining productive relationships between Brunel and all key stakeholders including Clients, Shareholders, Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), industry bodies, Government; and other external parties
  • Promoting collaboration across the LGPS pool companies

This role will involve regular UK travel, mainly London, and occasional international travel.

We are seeking an individual with strong leadership skills as well as the ability to build influential relationships at all levels, inside and outside the organisation. The CEO should bring a depth of knowledge on investment that can support and challenge the delivery of the investment objectives. You will be adept at managing internal teams including the development and encouragement of individuals with deep investment knowledge. With strong interpersonal and communication skills, you will also be capable of developing the existing culture that delivers Brunel’s high business standards, and will embrace and protect Brunel’s culture and values, ensuring that the business meets its regulatory obligations.

You will already be an FCA Approved Person or able to attain that status easily.
