The BBA is an independent, non-profit distributing company that has established a significant reputation within the built environment sector over the past 53 years. With offices in Watford, Liverpool and Dublin, and working in some 30 countries worldwide, we are the largest provider of assurance services to the UK built environment sector, with a turnover of around £11m+ and some 160, mainly scientific and technical, staff. This diverse, growing business has over 700 clients, including some of the largest construction product manufacturers in the world and some of the largest energy providers in the UK.

These are incredibly exciting times for the BBA as we continue to deliver our ambitious growth strategy within an increasingly demanding environment, and yet one that provides increasing opportunities for the business. In order to match the emerging needs of the sector we work in, we have developed a comprehensive digital transformation programme, which focuses on processes and business to business interfaces. Our technical skills are second to none and will be the driving force behind an already strong brand.

We are now looking to appoint two high-calibre and passionate Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to support and strengthen our Governing Board and to provide guidance and insights on strategic development in our existing and potentially new business areas. In these roles we would expect you to support and uphold our core values which are courage, integrity, loyalty, collaboration, passion and accountability. We are especially looking for individuals with the following skill sets and expertise:
  • Detailed knowledge of the construction industry and with a particular interest in technical issues which will enable you to offer strategic support to our growing range of businesses in certification, assessment and testing. You will be expected to have worked at a senior level in the construction industry for at least 10 years and ideally have direct experience of working at Director level in the construction products sector. Please quote ref. CINEDCP.
  • Passionate about innovation and with particular interest in the built environment and related industries, and their relationship to the Government's forward-looking Industrial Strategy and Clean Growth Strategy. You will have a vision of changes that can be made in systems performance in the built environment and the role that third-party certification/assurance has to play in ensuring that new systems can be brought to the market successfully. Please quote ref. CINEDBE.

Suitably qualified applicants will also be considered for the role of Senior Independent Director (SID). In that role you will provide particular support to the Chair of the Board, act as their sounding board, and act as an intermediary for the other directors. You will provide an alternative point of contact for major stakeholders in their dealings with the business. The SID also takes the lead in annual appraisals of the Chair. Please state if you also wish to be considered for this role in your application.

Our new NEDs will need to demonstrate the following range of skills in order to deliver the strategic leadership the BBA requires:
  • Tenacious and diplomatic with a good appreciation of the role of a non-executive director.
  • Evidence of expertise in your specialist area of business/industry
  • Financially astute with strong commercial acumen
  • Adept at developing excellent relationships with colleagues and Executive Directors
  • Ability to set strategic direction and to identify and critically assess opportunities and threats within a complex operating environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate independence of judgment
  • Evidence of success in your chosen career with good all-round business acumen
  • Ability to command the confidence of and influence stakeholders at all levels, including industry and other public bodies and agencies. We would expect you to be interested in research, innovation and quality assurance regimes.
  • Previous NED experience is highly desirable and essential for the role of SID.

This is a great opportunity for individuals to bring their expertise and knowledge to shape the future of the BBA and the built environment, and to widen their experience of working at Board level in an exciting business environment. As strategic thinkers, we want you to provide constructive challenge to the Executive Team in order to address strategic issues.

These roles are for a three-year term with eligibility for one extra term. The time commitment for the roles is circa 25 days a year, for which a salary of £15,000 is payable. You will be expected to attend 4-6 board meetings per year as well as informal briefing sessions and may be asked to participate on specialist committees, visit clients or attend events to represent the interests of the BBA.

If either of these roles interests you and you are looking for a very motivating and valuable opportunity, please send your CV and any supporting information, clearly indicating which of the two roles you are applying for, to Lorraine Anderson, Personal Assistant to the CEO at landerson@bbacerts.co.uk. You can find more information about the BBA on our website, www.bbacerts.co.uk.

BBA is committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from suitably qualified persons are encouraged.

Closing date for applications 28 June 2019. Initial interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held in London on 23 and 29 July 2019 with expected start date in November 2019.
