My client is a leading Global Retailer who are looking for a National Transport Manager to be based in the Midlands.

The UK business is undergoing significant change and they need someone to drive transformation and change within transport whilst managing business as usual.


The National Transport Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Ownership for driving strategic planning in the transport operation across multiple locations in the UK
  • Reducing delivery cost per order and improvements in key delivery metrics
  • Determine future demand for transportation resources and translate into operational plans based on budgets and growth trajectory
  • Optimal resource planning, route planning, delivery KPI reporting and cost management
  • Overall fleet management including sourcing, commercials, insurance, repair and maintenance
  • Implement initiatives to drive improvements in the delivery operation, e.g. on board van cameras, telematics, traffic profiles, data driven segmentation of the delivery area, optimal use of volumetrics for van fill
  • Strategic ownership for the future delivery operation
  • Route planning software, planning parameters, data inputs and overall methodology
  • Monthly revisions to the operating plan, incorporating planned operational improvements
  • Daily route planning of customer deliveries and producer collections
  • Daily monitoring of the delivery operation
  • Capturing variances between plan and actual
  • Root causing variances and implementing solutions to resolve
  • Innovating as we grow to continually drive improvements in cost, efficiency and customer service


The successful National Transport Manager will have the following experience:

  • Extensive knowledge of transport processes and practices, ideally including P&L accountability
  • Experience of managing a budget in excess of £40m
  • Previous experience of managing a national or multi site transport operation
  • CPC Qualification
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering continuous improvement and organisational development projects
  • Operational transport management experienced in leading a team in a fast-paced, high volume, preferably multi-drop, transport operation
  • Experience in change-management in a fast paced and rapidly evolving business
  • Effective in cross-functional working
  • Able to work on own initiative in a pressurised environment
  • PC Literate with a competent knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Effective communicator who is able to influence at all levels
  • Numerate self-starter who wants to progress their career

Job Offer

£60,000 - £70,000 + benefits
