The Role

The University continues to grow in scale and complexity. As an impact maximising institution (rather than a profit generating one), the University’s financials are complex. There is a need to balance investments in both people and the academic capital estate to stay globally competitive.

A Head of Financial Planning & Budgeting is being recruited to develop a prioritised budget into a financial operating framework through which to run the University’s operations in a financially sustainable manner.

This new role will work in partnership with the University in the development and implementation of Financial Planning and Budgeting techniques, processes, and risk analysis. The role will support an improved understanding of revenue drivers at University and departmental level, and improved budgetary disciplines and control.

The Candidate

The Head of Financial Planning and Budgeting will be a highly credible, experienced and intellectually rigorous individual. They will be responsible for providing the senior finance leadership team and Planning and Resource Committee with strong and independent support and advice, whilst developing best practice across the Group.

The post holder will be able to demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience gained in Financial Planning and analysis gained in large and complex organisations.
  • Broad range of economic, financial and commercial exposure.
  • Deep understanding of risk analysis and associated impact on Planning techniques.
  • Experience of change management and continuous improvement.
  • Stakeholder relationship management.
  • Experience of communication and presentation.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills at all levels and with professional / non-professional stakeholders. Networking skills with ability to act through influence rather than with direct authority.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Professional integrity and commitment.
  • Planning and prioritisation of complex and competing workload. Strong report writing and presentation skills.
  • Change management.

The appointed individual will be educated to Degree level as a minimum and likely to have professional qualifications as an Accountant, Economist or Risk specialist.
