Monocle International is proud to be working with a large UK Wholesale Distribution Group. This business supplies a wide range of food products (in excess of 4000) within the Non-Food, Ambient, Chilled, Fresh and Frozen categories to the Foodservice sector in the South of the UK.

The turnover for two of the Group depots which relate to this position is c£20M and they employ 150 employees. With ambitious growth plans, this side of the business is looking to increase capacity and relocate to larger premises where the turnover will have the potential to double to c£60M.

As the business continues to grow it has reached a point where they are now in a situation to bring in an Operations Director to head up and control the operations of the business. The existing Operations Manager will focus on the buying side of the business. This role will report into the GM and sit alongside the GM, current Operations Manager, Sales Director and Finance Manager as an integral part of the management team.

Key responsibilities
  • Work closely with the senior management team to ensure key business objectives and targets are achieved.
  • Managing the development and performance of 5 direct reports across Logistics, Warehousing and Planning/Distribution.
  • Manage and control the warehouse operations.
  • Manage and control the vehicles/drivers.
  • Ensure customer orders are picked efficiently and accurately.
  • Ensure vehicles leave the depot timely and in conjunction with agreed targets.
  • Ensure that all KPI's relating to van departures, customer order shortages and credits are achieved.
  • Add value to the senior management team and liaise with HR to create, implement and establish a development program.
  • Ensure that the processes for controlling stock, bar coding, drivers handhelds are robust and effective.
  • Work with the senior managers to ensure that adequate resources are in place to meet forecasted business levels.
  • Lead regular operations meetings with productive and tangible outcomes.
  • Work with the GM to develop continuous improvement plans, make sure they are introduced effectively and there is clarity around the expectations for these.

Desired skills
  • A significant degree of experience in managing warehouses and/or distribution centres, ideally within the Food industry.
  • The ability to create a balance between understanding the importance of following strict processes, whilst being able to adopt an entrepreneurial and flexible approach when required.
  • A 'hands-on' approach when necessary. Due to the fast expansion of the business this may be the case from time to time.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours as required due to the nature of this being a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation.
