This Senior Legal Counsel Data Protection role is based in London or Manchester and involves:

  • To provide legal and commercial advice and solutions for UK&I in the areas of data protection & ethics
  • To lead on all aspects of data privacy requirements under applicable Data Protection Act legislation in UK&I including the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
  • To lead, project manage and implement the company's GDPR compliance programme for UK&I
  • To establish and implement Data Protection & ethics policies, processes, training and supporting materials
  • To advise senior teams, data controllers and data processors in relation to privacy requirements
  • To report performance and compliance metrics to the UK&I Regional Counsel, Risk Management Committee and Regional Leadership Committee
  • To support other UK&I lawyers regarding legal data protection and ethics queries

Provide effective advice, guidance and solutions regarding all aspects of data protection law compliance (including GDPR) and ethics


Implement a programme of work to ensure the company meets all requirements of GDPR in the UK&I

Act as ultimate contact for data subjects and manage a solution for responding to data subject access requests

Advise on data protection impact assessments and monitor their performance

Advise senior management of developments in applicable data protection law and required changes

Implement innovative solutions and processes to improve data protection compliance

Implement and manage a process to identify, investigate and report on alleged data protection breaches

Cooperate and ensure an effective relationship / communications with the Information Commissioner's Office and act as a contact point for issues relating to data processing and consultation

Participate and advise regularly as required on data protection compliance and ethics at senior management level

Liaise with senior management to ensure informed decision making on data security

Monitor, review and report on compliance with data protection law, policies, processes including the assignment of responsibilities, training and related audits

Produce, deliver and maintain training on data protection requirements, policies and processes (including GDPR)

Produce, deliver and maintain training on ethical compliance


This Senior Legal Counsel Data Protection role is based in London or Manchester and requires:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Qualified practising solicitor or barrister in the UK or equivalent jurisdiction
  • Experience of working with a large multi-site services organisation with Legal, IT, Business and other functions
  • Experience of working in a matrix management model where achievement of objectives will rely upon work performed by those outside of direct management control
  • Practical understanding of data security techniques and with the principles of ISO27001
  • Analytical thinking and decision making skills; able to analyse complex situations by looking at multiple causes and effects so that resources are focused in the right areas
  • Strong relationship management skills and proven ability to create networks, work collaboratively and build influence and advocacy across different businesses and stakeholder groups
  • Effective presentation skills, written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Fully mobile (UK / Ireland Driving Licence) and flexible to travel across the UK&I Region
  • Demonstrated minimum 5 years' experience in data protection law and practice*
  • Project, leadership and change management skills
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement complex solutions which have a significant beneficial impact


  • Privacy practitioner qualification in data protection / GDPR
  • Significant in-house experience of data protection compliance
  • Modern European languages
  • Candidates with more or less experience in data protection will be considered and assessed against the role's technical requirements
