The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI)

Independent non-executive Chair

Time commitment of 3-4 days per month

London

The ATI is at the heart of UK aerospace research and technology. Working collaboratively with Government, industry and the wider UK aerospace eco-system, the ATI sets the UK’s aerospace technology strategy (Raising Ambition) to reflect the sector’s vision and ambition.

The ATI was established in 2013 in partnership between government and industry (originally with a combined funding commitment of £2bn to 2020). It is one result of the Aerospace Growth Partnership’s (AGP) success and although linked by the broader industrial strategy, the Institute is run independently as a private company, limited by guarantee, with a Board made up of non-executives representing industry and the public sector.

Since inception the combined funding available has been increased to £4bn to 2026 and so far around half of that has been committed. At its core the ATI produces a market led technology strategy which is then used to guide grant funding for commercial aerospace R&D at up to 50% of the cost, using an annual £150m (which industry match).

Role

Following completion of the current independent non-executive chair’s second term (January 2020), a new independent non-executive chair is being sought for the next phase of the ATI’s evolution. This is a role for a senior individual who can command the respect of senior stakeholders in the industry and engage at the highest levels of government.

The Independent Non-Executive Chair will be well-networked and highly respected with a broad commercial background. The successful candidate will bring a track record of operating at the cusp of industry and government and have the capability to lead and manage diverse multi-disciplinary teams. Non-executive experience at Board level is essential.
