As the UK implements new data protection legislation and prepares to leave the European Union, what role could you play in influencing the changing privacy and information rights landscape, whilst helping organisations understand their obligations and people exercise their rights?

About us

Our work as the UK’s privacy and information rights regulator has never been more important.

Data protection is the largest area of work for us, one of 11 pieces of legislation we oversee which includes Freedom of Information Act and the Environmental Information Regulations, and as such we hold a unique position as a regulator across the whole of the private, public and third sectors.

The arrival of the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK Data Protection Act, means huge change for the regulator and we are currently strengthening and expanding our team to meet our new obligations and provide excellent public services under our increased regulatory remit.

About the role  

This is an exciting time to join the ICO and take up this truly global role, which is central to the digital economy. The Director of Strategic Policy (International) is responsible for critically important activities such as:

  • Providing strategic leadership to the ICO departments responsible for international activity
  • Engaging key international stakeholders within the EU and globally, incorporating other regulators and overseas governments to build relationships which focus on the delivery ICO’s international strategy
  • Working with the department Head for International Engagement to create long and short term strategic business plans and budgets, ensuring that they are joined up across the directorate and contribute to the achievement of the ICO’s goals by making the relevant connections to other operational areas
  • Representing the ICO and its values effectively at senior level in engagements and presentations nationally and internationally for the Commissioner

About you

You will have substantial strategic and operational experience relevant to the role, including leading people managers and delivery of services in a policy discipline and international liaison.

It is essential that you have experience of engaging and negotiating with senior external stakeholders in the UK and overseas and have knowledge of the regulatory environment and the public sector generally, including the democratic, political and organisational framework.

Ideally, you will have substantial experience of interpreting and applying complex legislation with emphasis on the legal framework required to support effective regulation.
