Context

Macildowie Associates have been partnering this organisation from a recruitment perspective for a number of years. The CEO has asked us to commence a search for an executive-level candidate to help create a culture of quality and efficiency in their engineering operations. This appointment will compliment and diversify their existing leadership team to assist in the successful fulfilment of strategic growth targets over the coming years. The organisation is PE backed, with the appointee likely to be a key agent of change and growth from a revenue perspective. As such the role will have significant exposure to the investment team.

Founded in 2003, our client provides engineering services to a number of sectors, namely automotive, aerospace and marine. Their products are crucial components in tier 1 and 2 suppliers as well as direct to OEMs. The company is quality driven demonstrated by recent high profile contract wins and ISO 9001 accreditation.

Role

This opportunity is for a Director-level individual with significant experience of optimising quality an deficiency in a high-volume, low-value manufacturing or engineering environment.

This is a new role as one of their newest facilities goes online and gears up to fulfil orders against a rapidly expanding order pipeline. Whilst most of the engineering/production staff are in situ, an important part of the role will be to liaise with the HR team to ensure critical roles are staffed and contingencies are made in the event critical roles lie vacant.

Remaining on the people theme, the business is (rightly) proud of their positive, inclusive and go-get attitude. Thriving on innovations borne out of customer feedback and requests, the organisation has gained a reputation for agility and quick turnaround times on innovations. They are extremely protective of their quality focus, considering themselves highly customer-centric. This is reflected in their online reviews.

Consequently they seek a candidate who values the power of their people above all else.

That said, the right candidate will need to come from a background of manufacturing/engineering. Ideally, the right candidate will have a background in engineering or will have worked their way up the ranks in a manufacturing/engineering business. You will need to be able to talk the language of someone responsible for production capability.

Skilled with managing people and machinery that delivers extremely tight tolerance products, the successful candidate will be able to evidence their ability to manage significant engineering facilities which operate 18 hours a day on shift patterns. Additionally, the role requires a candidate who can work in a constructive and engaging manner in the leadership team, especially with the Supply Chain Director and Transport Director, on whose teams the operations rely.

Deliverables and performance bonus

In the first instance, this will be working with the senior leadership team in the business to vet technology suppliers to assess equipment to ensure the facility scales in the most efficient way as the order book increases. As this role becomes BAU, the bonus scorecard will have two measurables:

Quality component: Quality is critical. These products are important components in numerous sectors such as automotive, aerospace and marine. Products failing tolerance/fatigue tests etc hold up the supply chain. This role will be to ensure quality remains as high as possible. Bonuses are calibrated through a quality metric and this forms the highest % of the bonus.

Efficiency component: Whilst quality is most important bonus filter, there is also a metric suite against efficiency. Products delivered OTIF against customer SLAs being the obvious measurement.

Why would you want this role?

You would be responsible for a manufacturing facility with a highly motivated specialist workforce. Working for an established and highly regarded brand, there are (over time) opportunities to develop your career elsewhere in the business.

Remuneration

The role I spaying c £100k basic + bonus (as above) + car allowance + pension + healthcare + death in service.
