The Bishop Fraser Trust

The Bishop Fraser Trust is a Church of England multi-academy trust operating across Bolton. The trust seeks professional with skills in HR OR legal/compliance OR Risk Management to join its board as a non-executive director. Board meetings are held in the Bolton area. Applicants of all faiths and of none are welcomed.

About the trust

The three schools within the MAT are St James's C of E High School; Canon Slade School, a secondary school and sixth form; and Bolton St Catherine's Academy, an all through school and sixth-form based in an area of high deprivation. The trust also includes a Teaching School which provides high quality training and development for teachers in the local area.

The MAT was founded to provide the opportunity for its schools to share skills and resources providing for greater efficiencies and opportunities to retain and develop the best staff. The schools within the MAT support each other to promote and develop further high quality education in a Christian context in Bolton.

The Bishop Fraser Trust's vision is for outstanding schools to work together and support schools in other categories. It seeks to explore the possibilities of capital projects in the schools, to continue to develop its links as part of the Bolton family of schools and to grow Christian leaders and the leaders of the schools of the future.

Plans for the future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:


Raising academic and behaviour standards at Bolton St Catherine's Academy;
Developing the trust sixth form offer to secure future viability;
To restructure various groups of staff and develop excellent teacher training, and to ensure the recruitment and retention of high quality staff in all schools within the trust;
To grow the MAT whilst ensuring all systems and structures fully aligned. This includes developing a complementary staffing offer for trust staff.

Role summary Number of positions advertised: 1 Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees - or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust's charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

The trust seeks an individual with significant experience at a senior/executive level. This person will have the skills to challenge constructively and to play a strategic role, to successfully effect change and meet the trust's objectives. The successful individual will work collectively with other trustees and will be expected to show willingness to devote time and effort to the role. It is not necessary for candidates to be worshipers of any faith but all must support the trust's Christian ethos.

Time commitment

The trust board meets 4 times per year with meetings usually starting around 6pm and lasting up to 2 hours. Most trustees are invited to join one of the two sub committees which are Assets (which also covers all matters relating to finance) and Education Standards. The sub committees also meet 3-4 times per year and their meetings are rotated between the schools to allow trustees to see, first-hand, some of the work in each school. Some additional time may be required for routine training. In total it is expected that trustees will need to devote 4-6 hours per month (on average across the year).

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries - and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 832 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
