The Open University, Chief Financial Officer

Milton Keynes | Competitive salary

The Open University (OU) is a unique institution. Our distance learning approach, open entry requirements and four nations remit set us apart from other universities, giving us unrivalled reach and influence. Over the last 50 years, millions of people of all ages and backgrounds have achieved their potential through studying with us. Our focus on student success and widening access is complemented by our pedagogical innovation and research excellence.

The OU is the UK’s largest university. In 2018 we welcomed nearly 175,000 students and generated a total income of £424m. We have a strong balance sheet with substantial reserves, which has enabled investment in strategic change to build for our future. As part of this transformation programme, we have created the new role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). A key member of the Executive Team, reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor (CEO equivalent), the CFO will lead the University’s financial and commercial strategy. The CFO will have oversight of the OU’s commercial subsidiaries, including FutureLearn and OU Worldwide, and will make a significant contribution to the diversification and sustainable growth of the University’s sources of income.

The appointed candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent, with a recognised professional accountancy qualification. You will bring demonstrable leadership success at a senior executive level, with exposure to a non-executive board. Significant scale of strategic and operational management experience, plus a broad financial and commercial skill set, are essential. You will be robust and resilient, with a strong intellect and the capacity to thrive in a commercial role within an academic community. We are looking for individuals who are entrepreneurial and innovative, with a track record of achieving significant business outcomes in either a private or public sector organisation.

This is a unique role within the higher education sector that offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of millions more people.
