The Government is committed to an ambitious agenda of skills reform and drive to increase productivity. Key to this reform programme is employers taking ownership of determining the skills they need their apprentices to achieve to best serve their business.

The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (“the Institute”) was established in April 2017 to enable these reforms, making sure they truly deliver for the country and ensure employers and apprentices get the quality they deserve. It is a Crown body, independent of Government and employer-led with a mandate set by Ministers. The Institute:

  • Oversees the development, and acts as the ultimate decision maker on, approving apprenticeship standards and of assessment plans to ensure they are of high quality, sufficiently stretching and have employer backing
  • Advises on the maximum level of government funding available for those standards and how much employers can claim for them
  • Since 31 January it extended its role and focus into broader aspects of the skills landscape and assumed responsibility for approving the content and procurement for T Levels. It will continue to work with industry and the Awarding Organisations as the T Level roll out continues.
  • Is accountable for the quality of apprenticeships and technical education. It has a role overseeing External Quality Assurance (EQA) across all EQA providers to ensure quality, consistency and credibility

We are now seeking a new Chief Executive to lead the organisation. This is a unique and great opportunity to positively influence the Institute at an exciting stage in its development and drive forward the skills landscape of this country. We want the Institute to assure the development of high quality apprenticeships and technical qualifications so they are viewed and respected as highly as other education routes.

The Chief Executive will ensure the Institute remains in step with the direction of the Government’s reform agenda, directly supporting the Chair and Board, and managing around 150 staff. The Chief Executive will also need to continue building capability so that T Level technical qualifications are delivered successfully, and ensure apprenticeship standards are kept up to date and continue to meet employer needs. The postholder will be expected to work as a collaborative partner with senior stakeholders across the employer landscape, and be a visible and authoritative presence on the public stage and a credible figure within the business community. Candidates will also need excellent judgement and political acumen, and an ability to lead a complex operational organisation.
