Non-Executive Director of OPRED Board
Non-Executive Director of The Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment & Decommissioning (OPRED) Board
Take on a career-defining challenge.
The Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) works in partnership with the oil and gas industries. Promoting best practice, supporting compliance with regulatory functions and industry standards, and overseeing environmental and decommissioning activity in the UK Continental Shelf, our work is challenging and deeply interesting. Falling under the guidance of the Energy and Security Directorate which exists within BEIS (the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy), our work is widely valued by both the Government and the wider industry.
We currently have a high-profile opportunity for a senior-level professional to join our Corporate Governance Board. Supporting OPRED's Chief Executive and the leadership team, you will enhance our ambitions to be the best global regulator in the sector. The UK oil and gas sector is at a critical phase of balancing its need to attract new investment, while seeking the best and most affordable decommissioning outcome for the environment, so effective and pragmatic risk management has never been more important. Providing you with an unmatchable insight into a wide regulatory remit, you will therefore use your sector knowledge to provide positive challenge and enhance accountability. Offering evidence-led advice, you will provide a business insight into our regulatory function, helping us shape areas of improvement. With discussions ranging from leadership, people and culture to environmental risk, better regulation, and financial exposure that is worth £billions, this is a multi-layered role that will provide you with some fascinating challenges.
We are keen to raise the profile and effectiveness of OPRED, so it is imperative that we have a diverse board with a broad range of skills and knowledge. As such, you will excel in this role if you have considerable senior-level management experience relating to the oil and gas industry, with a background in risk management. Regulatory experience would be desirable, but is not strictly necessary. Crucially, you will have sound judgement, analytical and advisory capabilities. A natural leader with good communication skills, you will have the capacity to remain impartial and to contribute to discussions at a strategic level.
Please note that as OPRED is not an Arm's Length Body, this is not a public appointment. Your renumeration will be £500 per day, up to 15 days per year. Any additional days will be worked on a voluntary basis, with reasonable travel and subsistence expenses being reimbursed. While you will be initially committing to the role for a single term of three years, the position may be renewable up to a maximum of five years. Board meetings are usually held in Aberdeen (where OPRED is based) but you are welcome to work flexibly for other OPRED duties.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to influence the future of the oil and gas industries. Join us, and ensure it's a future that we can all be proud of.
