Independent Members of the Board of Governors

De Montfort University (DMU) is an ambitious, globally-minded institution with a relentless focus on delivering excellent teaching and learning, high-quality research and a sector-leading student experience. A culturally rich university with a strong commitment to the public good, it strives to maintain a stimulating and inclusive environment, where staff and students are able to thrive. Awarded ‘Gold’ in the Teaching Excellence Framework, the university is a vibrant, multi-cultural hub of learning, creativity and innovation that was recently named the first ever ‘University of the Year for Social Inclusion’ in The Times and Sunday Times’ Good University Guide 2019.

DMU is seeking to add three exceptional new independent governors to its board; individuals with the skills, experience and time to make a real and lasting difference as we seek to build further on our strong position within the sector.

The board plays a crucial role in the development of the university’s vision and strategic direction. These opportunities will therefore prove pivotal as we seek to address a number of current challenges. Some are shared with all universities, such as the impact of Brexit and the national uncertainties around funding while we await the Augar review. DMU is extremely well placed to respond, with a healthy financial position and robust home and international student recruitment performance. In addition, DMU has recently seen the departure of the former Vice-Chancellor of nine years, the Chairman of the Board of Governors and three other independent governors. Swift action is being taken to address issues related to our governance, and the recruitment of new governors is vital in helping us continue to build on DMU’s reputation as a dynamic and creative university with a rich and exciting future.

It is essential that individuals are committed to DMU’s values of diversity, inclusivity and a global approach, and are able to work collaboratively with a talented executive team for the benefit of all students and staff. Interest would particularly be welcome at this time from those with expertise in the following areas: finance, audit, education and law.
