The purpose of the role is to manage the running of a controlled and efficient finance function, consisting of c.15-20 people in total. The Commercial Controller will deliver accurate financial results in a strong control-focused environment, managing financial and commercial risk and opportunities for profit improvement. Acting as a trusted Finance Business Partner the Commercial Controller will support and advise a number of operational, commercial and finance teams, playing an active role in delivering the finance strategy.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring financial controls are highly effective and compliant with group policies and are maintained and communicated
  • Creating and maintaining first class financial reporting in adherence to group policies
  • Identifying and managing financial and commercial risk through a thorough understanding of commercial terms, on-going performance, and other influencing factors
  • Understanding and managing sources of profit delivery including flex budgets, gain share, KPIs, pricing mechanisms etc.
  • Managing and monitoring the ongoing and future financial performance of the business to ensure management can optimise decision making
  • Creating, driving and managing improvement programmes to aid business efficiency and profitability
  • As required, supporting the preparation of contracts & business cases from a commercial & financial perspective, working with other stakeholders (e.g. legal, risk, property, tax) to ensure profit optimisation & risk mitigation.
  • Undertaking cost builds to support renewal and new business opportunities utilising existing knowledge and UKI best practice
  • Ensuring adherence to corporate accounting standards, business compliance, policies and procedures are adopted and complied with
  • Owning and delivering the quality, effectiveness and robustness of the reporting and control agenda. Adopting strong and robust processes to ensure routine effective assurance of controls are being applied
  • Managing financial and commercial reporting & forecasting to aid decision making and monitor progress
  • Working with the UK accounting and governance team to ensure full alignment with the UK and Divisional framework
  • Actively managing, developing and motivating the Finance team
  • Managing and supporting own & others career development and succession agenda
  • Managing and developing financial and commercial expertise in the business

The successful candidate will need to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Proven relevant experience in one of either the Retail, FMCG or Logistics sectors
  • Significant commercial finance experience
  • Professional Accounting Qualification
